Program details

A play-based, parent-cooperative preschool in Mamaroneck, NY offering 2s, 3s, 4s & 5s, and a small-group Rainbow Room for children ages 2 through 5, on flexible part- and full-day schedules.

Age range

Programs serve children ages 2 through 5, with separate 2-Year-Old, 3-Year-Old, and 4 & 5-Year-Old classes plus a Rainbow Room for kindergarten-age children. To register for the 2s, a child must turn 20 months by December 31; for the 3s, a child must turn three by December 31. Children do not need to be toilet trained for the 3s program.

Schedule

Scheduling is flexible with morning, afternoon, and full-day options. The 2s offer 2-day (Thursday/Friday), 3-day (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday), or 5-day options, with full-day available for older 2-year-olds. The 3s and 4s & 5s offer 5 full days, 3 full days plus 2 half days, 2 full days plus 3 half days, or 5 morning or afternoon sessions.

Daily schedule

Morning sessions run 8:45 AM to 11:45 AM, afternoon sessions 12:15 PM to 2:45 PM, and full days 8:45 AM to 2:45 PM. An early-arrival option is available from 8:00 to 8:45 AM.

Curriculum

The play-based program follows The Creative Curriculum, grounded in early childhood education research, with the philosophy that play is a child's vehicle for learning. In the 4s and 5s, more structured learning is blended into the play-based model to build pre-academic skills in literacy, math, and science alongside art, music, and social-emotional growth for kindergarten readiness.

Class size

Classes are small, each with a head teacher and at least one assistant. The 2s rooms have 7 children with 2 teachers, the 3s rooms have 14 to 15 children with 2 teachers, and the 4s rooms have 18 children with 3 teachers.

Enrichment

Special enrichment classes are woven into the week: Yoga with Sue and Music with Kurt Gallagher (ages 2-5), Wild by Nature animal encounters (ages 2-5), Artistree Performing Arts (ages 3-5), and the Sheldrake Environmental Education Program (ages 3-5).

Rainbow Room

The Rainbow Room is a small-group bridge program for children who are 4 and kindergarten-eligible, or who just miss the kindergarten cutoff (turning 5 by December 31). With a 4:1 ratio (about 8 children with 2 teachers), children get small-group and one-on-one attention focused on literacy, math, and science.

Meals

The school is nut-free. A snack is served daily, typically a choice of fruits or vegetables, cheese or yogurt, and a whole-grain carbohydrate, with water to drink.

Parent cooperative

MCNS is a nonprofit parent cooperative led by a community of families who provide support in and out of the classroom. Through the Parent Participation Program for the 3s and 4s, a parent helps in the classroom and brings a simple snack approximately one half-day per month.

Enrollment

Applications for the upcoming school year are completed through an online form. An application deposit is due with the application, and the remaining tuition is paid in three equal installments. A sibling discount and need-based financial assistance are available, and specific tuition rates by program are listed in the tuition schedule. Small-group tours can be scheduled through sign-up links on the registration page.

Setting

A long-established community preschool operating for more than 65 years, with bright classrooms featuring large windows overlooking the playground and learning centers where children explore, create, and experiment freely. A summer camp program runs approximately two weeks longer than most other area preschools.
